A seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian coast, Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the fort that lies right in the middle of the town, built by the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo to defend the coast, and from the marble that from the nearby Apuan Alps, was transported to the pier to be loaded on to the ships.
The area of Forte dei Marmi, once a marshland, is situated on a plain, in a beautiful setting bordered by the sea and the beach, entirely composed of fine golden sands, and by the Apuan Alps.
The town has a lot of green areas, most of all the pinewoods and a few surviving oaks, ancient plants that were one typical of the area.
The town of Forte dei Marmi situated on the north coast of the province of Lucca, bordering with the province of Massa Carrara, is part of the geographical/historical region of Versilia, with its seaside resorts and charming inland towns such as Pietrasanta, renowned for its artistic background which animates the summer evenings with art exhibitions and festivals. The nearby town of Torre del Lago hosts the summer festival dedicated to the operas of Puccini.
Forte dei Marmi lies in a strategic position that allows to visit all the surrounding places of interest. The beautiful art towns of Tuscany: Pisa and Lucca are a 20 minutes' drive and Florence slightly over one hour's drive. The pier of the town, which was used to load the big blocks of marble on ships to be delivered all over the world, is today is today the departure point of the local ferry which takes the tourists, with a cruise lasting about one hour, to visit the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, pearls of the Liguria coast.

La Versiliana Festival

The event offers recitals, dance and music, along with a great number of shows suited to all tastes, as well as special guests and many nationally-recognised figures.
Sant’Ermete celebrations
The celebrations and events for Sant’Ermete Days start on August 26 with the renowed beach clubs rowing race and the historical parade from the City Hall to the Sant’Ermete Church.
On August 28, the most important event of the Sant’Ermete Days – a wonderful fireworks display – closes the celebration. The pyrotechnics are launched from the city wharf and suggestively reflect on the waves of the entire shoreline. Our guests can exclusively enjoy the fireworks from our beach restaurant Bambaissa.

The Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago is the only one in the world dedicated to the composer Giacomo Puccini.
It takes place every summer during the months of July and August, in the very places that inspired Maestro Puccini’s immortal melodies.
